5 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Children

You’ve got phonics on the table, a toddler on your hip, and a teen asking where the protractor went. Somewhere between maths and the washing, your heart whispers, Lord, help me raise them well. When you don’t know what to say before lessons—or when the day wobbles—pray Scripture. Short. True. Strong enough for noisy homes.

As a mum of six, raising arrows at the kitchen table. I’ve learnt to keep prayer simple and steady: a verse by the kettle, a breath prayer before maths, a one-sentence blessing at bedtime. No long speeches. No guilt. Just God’s Word in real life.

In this article, you’ll get five Bible-strong verses (KJV), each with a kid-friendly line and a one-minute prayer you can speak over your children and your homeschool—today. You’ll also get quick ideas for when you’ve only got 60 seconds, plus a gentle one-week plan you can stick on the fridge.

How to Use This

Think of these like tiny tools you can sprinkle through your day. Borrow what helps; leave the rest.

  • Pick one verse for the week. Write it big and tape it where you stand most (kettle, fridge, whiteboard). Say it aloud when you see it.
  • Use the kids line. It’s a simple sentence your children can repeat.
  • Pray the one-minute prayer. Out loud if you can; whispered if you can’t.
  • Tie verses to moments. Before maths = wisdom; out the door = protection; bedtime = blessing.
  • It still counts if it’s messy. Wriggles welcome. Short and sincere beats long and late.

1) Numbers 6:24–26 — Blessing & Peace for Our Home Day

“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

Kids line: “God smiles on you and gives you peace.”
One-minute prayer:
Lord, bless and keep my children today. Let Your face shine on our lessons and our laughter. Be gracious to our mistakes and give our home Your peace. Amen.

When to use: At breakfast or bedtime; over a stressed child; after tears.

2) Philippians 1:9–11 — Love, Wisdom & Discernment for Learning

“And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment… being filled with the fruits of righteousness…”

Kids line: “God grows our love and our good choices.”
One-minute prayer:
Father, make their love abound today. Grow true knowledge and wise judgement in reading, maths, and friendships. Fill them with good fruit that shows Jesus. Amen.

When to use: Before starting schoolwork; sibling tensions; group projects.

3) Colossians 1:9–12 — God’s Will, Strength & Patience to Persevere

“…that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will… strengthened with all might… unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness…”

Kids line: “God gives us strength and patient joy.”
One-minute prayer:
Lord, fill my children with the knowledge of Your will. Give them strength for hard tasks, patience when it’s slow, and joy as they try again. We give thanks to You. Amen.

When to use: Mid-lesson wobble; tricky topics; exam prep.

4) Psalm 121:7–8 — Protection as We Go Out and In

“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in…”

Kids line: “God watches over us everywhere we go.”
One-minute prayer:
Keeper of Israel, preserve my children today—body, mind, and heart. Watch their going out and their coming in—from this minute to bedtime. Keep them close to You. Amen.

When to use: School runs, activities, park days, church nights.

5) Isaiah 54:13 — Taught by the LORD (for Teachers and Children)

“And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.”

Kids line: “God Himself is our Teacher; His lessons bring peace.”
One-minute prayer:
Lord, be our Teacher today. Write truth on their hearts. Give them great peace as they learn, and help me teach with gentleness and clarity. Amen.

When to use: At the start of your homeschool block; when lessons feel chaotic.

When You’ve Only Got 60 Seconds

  • School-run blessing (by the door): “The LORD bless thee and keep thee… and give thee peace.” (Numbers 6:24–26)

  • Pre-maths courage (hand on shoulder): “God grows our love and our good choices.” (Philippians 1:9–11)
